RICHMOND, Va. (3/12/11) - The Princeton baseball team dropped an 8-2 decision to Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon at VCU's Diamond in the first game of its weeklong Spring Break trip. Holy Cross never trailed in the game and broke open a two-run game with a three-run fourth inning.
Princeton managed two runs on four hits in the loss, while Holy Cross plated eight runs on 10 hits and took advantage of five Princeton fielding errors. As a result of the errors, four of the eight runs would up being unearned.
Andrew Whitener tripled and scored on a passed ball for Princeton in the second inning and Mike Ford doubled in a run in the third inning after Matt Bowman and John Mishu singled ahead of him.
Princeton loaded the bases in the fourth with no outs and had two on and no outs in the sixth, but couldn't push across a run in either at-bat. After the two walks to start the sixth inning, Holy Cross retired 11 of the final 12 Princeton batters.
Alex Maldonado led Holy Cross with three hits and three RBIs. Matt Croglio got the win allowing two runs on four hits in five and a third innings. Zak Hermans took the loss after surrendering seven runs (four earned) on eight hits in 3.2 innings. Ryan Makis and A.J. Goetz each pitched two shutout innings in relief.
Princeton, which is now 1-3 this season, will play twice on Sunday, meeting Holy Cross again at 12 noon and then facing host VCU at 4 p.m.
