PRINCETON, N.J. (3/16/11) - The No. 12 seeded Princeton women's basketball team faces No. 5 Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, March 20 at approximately 2:30 p.m., in the second game at the Comcast Center in College Park, Md.
The game will be televised live ESPN and ESPN2. ESPN will utlize a "whip-around" approach to catch the best action from those games for viewers in most of the nation, while ESPN2 will televise the game of local interest based on the home market of the competing teams. The game will also be shown in its entirety on ESPN3.com and on ESPN Full Court if you have that package through your cable provider.
Fans can also listen to Princeton's Derek Jones call all the action on WPRB (103.3 FM) and online free of charge on GoPrincetonTigers.com.Princeton is 24-4 overall and is making its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance after winning the Ivy League with a 13-1 record. This is the Tigers' second appearance in the tournament in program history. Princeton is riding a 10-game winning streak most recently defeating Penn 78-27 in the regular season finale on March 8.
The Ivy League Player of the Year senior guard Addie Micir leads the Tigers in scoring with 12.1 points per game. She is the team's best free-throw and three-pointer shooter, hitting 80 percent of her free chances and 46.8 percent of her three-balls. Micir also sports a team-high 92 assists to go along with 34 steals and 15 blocks. Junior post Devona Allgood adds 12 points per game and has a team-high 41 blocks. She led the Ivy League in field goal percentage (53.8) and in rebounds with 7.3 per game. Junior guard Lauren Edwards contributes 11.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. The Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, sophomore point guard Lauren Polansky has a team-high 52 steals and 80 assists.
Princeton averages 69.9 points per game, a +18.6 scoring margin over its opponents, who are averaging just 51.3 ppg. The Tigers shoot 44.7 percent from the field, 41.8 percent from long range and 70 percent from the charity stripe.
Princeton and Georgetown have met twice in program history. The Hoyas won a 83-62 game in the Tigers' 1996 season opener in Georgetown. Princeton followed up with a win at home the next year, taking a 71-44 game at Jadwin on Nov. 23, 1997.
Princeton has several ties to Georgetown.
Georgetown is 22-10 overall after earning the eighth seed in the BIG EAST Tournament defeating Syracuse 61-60 before falling to Connecticut. The Hoyas closed out the regular season with a 1-4 record. The Hoyas have been in the national rankings all season currently sitting at No. 23 in the AP Poll and No. 21 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Blue & Gray has had four wins over nationally-ranked opponents and two over top 10 opponents. The team has defeated six NCAA Tournament squads. Georgetown has been to the NCAA Tournament twice before. Last year as No. 5 seed they defeated No. 12 Marist before falling to No. 4 Baylor. The program's first bid came in 1993 when it reached the Sweet 16 with a 23-7 record.
The Hoyas are paced by sophomore guard Sugar Rodgers. She averages 18.2 points per game while adding 4.7 rebounds, 82 steals and 75 assists. Rodgers is the team's best free-throw shooter hitting 82.7 percent (91-110) of her shots. She also has the most three's on the team with 83, shooting 33.5 percent from long range. Senior guard Monica McNutt is also scoring in double figures with 10.4 points per game while pulling down 4.4 rebounds. Junior forward Tia Magee is the team leader on the glass with 5.0 boards while junior forward Adria Crawford adds 4.8 per game. Crawford also has a team-high 17 blocks while Alexa Roche has 16 off the bench. Junior guard Rubylee Wright has a team-high 164 assists and adds 7.5 points per game.
Georgetown averages 63.5 points per game, a +7.2 margin over its opponents. The team shoots 39.1 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from behind the arc and 68.4 percent from the line.
