March 17, 2011 | Softball
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Princeton softball team swept Georgetown Wednesday afternoon by scores of 11-6 and 9-1, the second game lasting just six innings.
Princeton improved to 3-7 on the season, while Georgetown fell to 3-17. The Tigers will stay in D.C. to face George Washington in a single game Thursday at 4 p.m.
In the opener, Lizzy Pierce, Maddie Cousens and Alex Peyton all had three RBIs apiece, while Nicole Ontiveros and Kelsey VandeBergh had two hits each.
Peyton staked the Tigers to a 3-0 lead with a three-run home run in the first, which Pierce matched two innings later with a three-run blast of her own. That put the Tigers ahead 6-0 before the teams combined to score 11 runs between the fifth and sixth frames.
Peyton (2-3) tossed a complete game in the opener, striking out eight.
VandeBergh's grand slam during an eight-run sixth inning helped Princeton blow open a tight game in the nightcap on the way to a 9-1 win. Michelle Tolfa (1-3) struck out four and gave up five hits while tossing all six frames.
Tory Roberts had four of Princeton's 11 hits, going 4 for 4 with three runs scored.
