March 20, 2011 | Softball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Princeton's softball team split a pair of games Saturday at the University of Maryland's Tournament, defeating Villanova 2-1 before falling 4-2 to Hampton.
The Tigers will face Utah at 10 a.m. Sunday to close their play in the Maryland tournament and the spring trip.
Princeton trailed 1-0 until the fourth inning against Villanova when a leadoff home run by Candy Button tied it. Two innings later, Kelsey VandeBergh clubbed another solo shot, putting the Tigers ahead 2-1. VandeBergh had two of Princeton's five hits in the opener.
Michelle Tolfa (2-3) managed the Villanova (7-12) lineup in the circle, allowing four hits without a walk in her complete-game effort, striking out one.
Hampton (6-16) rallied to beat the Tigers, scoring three runs in the seventh inning against Princeton starter Alex Peyton (2-5).
Princeton took a 1-0 lead on a VandeBergh double in the third inning, but saw Hampton tie the game with an unearned run in the fifth. Princeton went back ahead 2-1 with the aid of a passed ball in the sixth inning, putting the Tigers three outs from a win. Hampton reached the first six batters of its half of the seventh inning on two singles, three walks and an error, helping the Pirates score the go-ahead three runs before retiring Princeton in order in the seventh.
Princeton's record moved to 6-9 with the split. After the Utah game, the Tigers will open their home schedule next Sunday against Marist.
