Late Goals Lead #6 LMU Past Women's Water Polo 8-6
March 20, 2011 | Women's Water Polo
The game was the Princeton's last of the nine it played during its Spring Break trip in California. Princeton went 5-4 in the nine games against top competition and all four losses were close decisions to teams ranked in the Top 10. Those four losses came by a combined seven goals.
Princeton fell behind in the game with LMU 3-0 early in the second quarter but came back to within a goal by half time as Cayley Bowles, Brittany Zwirner and Saranna Soroka scored in the second quarter. Soroka's goal came on a man-up.
Lauren Brunner scored on a counter a minute into the third quarter to even the score at 4-4 and Molly McBee scored on a 5-meter shot a minute later to give Princeton its first lead. Unfortunately for Princeton, it would also be the Tigers last lead as the Lions evened the score at 5-5 in the final minute of the third quarter and went ahead with a man-up goal three minutes into the final frame.
Cari Levine answered with a man-up goal for the Tigers with 2:51 remaining to tie the score at 6-6, but LMU drew an ejection on its next possession and converted with 2:18 to go to regain the lead. Princeton would get a chance to even the score on an LMU ejection less than a minute later but couldn't find the equalizer and LMU would seal the win with a goal with 13 seconds remaining.
Six Tigers scored goals in the loss, while Kristen Ward made 11 saves in the Tiger net. Princeton was 3 of 6 with the man advantage and scored on its one 5-meter chance. LMU also converted on a 5-meter chance and was 4 of 9 on ejections.
Princeton is now 11-8 overall after its 5-4 weeklong trip. The Tigers will return to campus this weekend and have next weekend off. Princeton plays next the April 2-3 weekend at home when Bucknell and Michigan visit DeNunzio Pool.
