Baseball Makes Wednesday Trip to Seton Hall for Final Ivy Tune-up
March 29, 2011 | Baseball
Princeton is 4-13 overall and is coming off a weekend where it went 1-3 in a pair of doubleheaders at Navy. While the outcome wasn't what the Tigers had hoped for, Princeton was in all four games and each was winnable. Three of Princeton's four starters allowed four or less earned runs in their starts and A.J. Goetz earned the win for the Tigers with four good innings out of the bullpen.
Offensively Nate Baird led the way with a .417 average last weekend and has his season totals up to .254 as he moved down the lineup into more of a run-producing role. His current eight-game hitting streak leads the team. Alec Keller served as the lead-off hitter for much of the weekend and batted .385 and now has the team's top batting average at .333. Sam Mulroy and Mike Ford both went 5 for 16 at Navy for a .357 average and provided some power as well. Mulroy had a double, two triples and four RBIs over the weekend while Ford doubled, homered and scored five runs. Steve Harrington also continued his strong play offensively with four hits in 12 at-bats. He now has hits in his last five games.
Princeton will play its first Northern non-league game on Wednesday when the Tigers travel to Seton Hall. The teams did not play last season but met in the previous six seasons. Princeton holds an 18-36-1 all-time record against the Pirates and won the last meeting 15-12 back in the 2009 season. Current Tigers Sam Mulroy and Matt Connor each had a hit in the game while Matt Grabowski got the last four Seton Hall batters in order for the save. Grabowski will start Wednesday's game for Princeton.
Seton Hall is currently 10-10 overall and 2-1 in the Big East. The Pirates enter the week having won five of six games and face Rider on Tuesday afternoon immediately preceding Wednesday game with Princeton. Two weeks ago the Pirates got home wins over Fordham, Stony Brook and NJIT and then took two of three at Villanova over the weekend. Princeton and Seton Hall have only faced one common opponent. Princeton lost a midweek game at North Carolina and while Seton Hall took the finale of a three-game series in Chapel Hill.
The Tigers open the Ivy League slate on Saturday against Brown at Clarke Field. Game time for the doubleheader is scheduled for 12 noon.
