Softball Falls to Siena 2-0 in Opener
March 04, 2011 | Softball
CATONSVILLE, Md. -- Siena snuffed out an early threat from the Princeton softball team Friday afternoon and kept the momentum, defeating the Tigers 2-0 to open Princeton's season.
Princeton (0-1) got a leadoff single from Nicole Ontiveros and a walk to Candy Button to put runners at first and second in the opening frame, but Siena (3-3) starter Jessica-Jo Sandrini (2-1) got the next three batters to end the Princeton chance.
The Tigers got four more walks from Sandrini but just one more hit, a fifth-inning single from Button that represented the only runner of that stanza.
Princeton starter Michelle Tolfa (0-1) gave up two hits and two walks, striking out three in four innings of work before handing the ball to Liza Kuhn for the final three. Kuhn gave up three hits and a walk.
The Saints got one run off each Princeton pitcher, the first coming when a Kayla Kaminsky groundout brought home a leadoff single from Sandrini in the fourth, and the second came across two innings later when a Courtney Brinkman groundout scored a leadoff double by Sandrini. The Siena pitcher had three of the Saints' five hits.
Four Tigers made their collegiate debuts Friday, with rookie Maddie Cousens starting behind the plate, Tory Roberts getting the nod at second base and Austin Sanders subbing in at left field. Nikki Chu, a sophomore who missed all of last season due to injury, got the start at shortstop.
Princeton will play a pair Saturday, first at 9:30 a.m. against Iona followed by a 1:30 p.m. game against Liberty.
