#1 Men's Lightweights Look To Retain Perfect Record, Fosburgh Cup
April 01, 2011 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
Two weeks into the season seems a bit early for Senior Day, but the Class of 2011 will compete for the final time on Lake Carnegie Saturday morning when the top-ranked Princeton men's lightweight crew takes on both Columbia and Georgetown for the Fosburgh Cup.
Princeton, which has won 22 of its last 23 regular season races, opened its season last weekend with a nine-second victory over Navy. That regatta, and the pair of EARC and IRA national championships over the previous two seasons, led Princeton to the No. 1 ranking in the latest national poll. Princeton won each of the top three varsity races and had its freshman eight win by less than three seconds over the Midshipmen.
Head coach Marty Crotty, a guest on this week's edition of TigerCast, was pleased with the team's effort last weekend, but he is also well aware of how strong the rest of the league will be throughout the season.
Georgetown enters this weekend ranked fourth nationally and is making its season debut. The Hoyas provided a tough challenge for Princeton last season and lost by only 3.8 seconds when this trio met for the Fosburgh Cup regatta. Columbia is currently ranked eighth and is also making its season debut; the Lions are led by Scott Alwin, a former Princeton assistant coach.
This will be the final home regatta for The Class of 2011, which would like nothing more than to win EARC, Ivy League and IRA national titles in each of their three varsity years. The group is led by senior captain Robin Prendes, the 1V stroke since 2009, while rowers like Christian Klein and Nick Donald have also been part of championship boats.
Following this weekend, Princeton will take April 9 off and return to competition April 16 in the Platt Cup regatta against third-ranked Cornell; both No. 3 Cornell and No. 2 Harvard picked up one first-place vote apiece in this week's national poll.
