Young, Ohlendorf and Venable Begin 2011 Major League Season
April 01, 2011 | Baseball
Young enters his first season with New York Mets after signing with the club as a free agent during the offseason. His last two seasons have been cut short by injuries so Young hopes to stay healthy as a member of the Mets' 2011 rotation. The former Princeton two-sport star is 48-34 in 135 career starts at the Major League level with Texas and San Diego. He has a career ERA of 3.80. He will start the Mets fourth game of the season next Tuesday at Philadelphia.
Ohlendorf begins his third full season as a member of the starting rotation of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Ohlendorf went 1-11 with a 4.07 ERA in 21 starts last year and will look to bounce back in 2011 after posting an 11-10 record and 3.92 ERA in 29 starts a season earlier. The righty is 13-25 with a 4.40 career ERA in 354 major league innings. Ohlendorf will start Pittsburgh's third game of the season on Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field against the Cubs.
Lastly Venable begins his second full season as an everyday member of the San Diego Padres' outfield. Venable is a .251 career hitter with 27 career home runs and 99 RBIs in 255 games at the Major League level. Venable made his 2011 debut on Thursday afternoon in the Padres' opener, hitting a double and scoring a run in the team's win.
In addition to Princeton's three Major Leaguers, five former Tigers are in Minor League Spring Training and will receive assignments next week. Those in Minor League camp include Dan Barnes and Jack Murphy (Toronto), Dan DeGeorge (Cleveland), David Hale (Atlanta) and Brad Gemberling (Arizona). Check back next week for more info on their 2011 assignments.
