Baseball Swept at Dartmouth but Heads to Division Play Tied Atop Standings
April 10, 2011 | Baseball
Game 1 (Box Score)
Dartmouth took the opener with a run in the bottom of the 10th inning. While the winning run in the 10th inning was earned for the Big Green, Dartmouth took advantage of Tiger errors to plate its first three runs in the win as the Tiger defense combined for five errors.
Ennis Coble drove in the first Dartmouth run in the first with a single after Sam Bean reached on an error. Princeton evened the score in its next at-bat though as Mike Ford led off the second with a solo home run. Dartmouth regained the lead in the third inning as a dropped fly ball put a runner on second and a fielding error let the run score.
Princeton drew even in the fifth inning when Andrew Whitener drew a lead-off walk and came around to score on an Alec Keller single. The Tigers then took their first lead of the game in the eighth inning as Steve Harrington singled home Ford, who had led off the inning with a single. The Tigers went ahead in that inning, but left two on base, and would end up stranding another in the ninth and two in the 10th.
Dartmouth would even the score in the bottom of the eighth inning. Bean hit a one-out single and would score on a play that started with a Jason Brooks single and continued with errors in the outfield and infield to let Bean score the equalizer.
Dartmouth then won the game in the 10th as three straight batters drew walks with one out and Jeff Onstott delivered the winning single.
Ford went 8.2 innings in the start and allowed three runs, all unearned, on six hits, while striking out six. He held Dartmouth to just one hit through the first eight innings. David Palms took the loss in relief. Ryan Smith had the win for Dartmouth.
Game 2 (Box Score)
Dartmouth completed the sweep with a 5-2 win in the nightcap despite being outhit by Princeton's offense. The Big Green plated three runs in the first inning and never trailed in the win.
Singles from Brooks, Coble and Ryan Toimil plated runs in the bottom of the first off of Princeton starter Matt Grabowski. He settled in from there and held Dartmouth scoreless until the seventh inning.
Princeton got a run back in the fifth when Matt Connor led off the inning with a solo home run, but the Big Green added two runs in the seventh off a double from Joe Sclafani and a sac fly from Brooks.
Princeton threatened in the ninth, pushed across a run and brought the tying run to the plate but Dartmouth got a game-ending strikeout to end the threat. Harrington hit a pinch-hit single in the inning and would score on a Matt Bowman grounder.
Grabowski took the loss as he allowed five runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings. Ryan Makis did not allow a hit in 1.2 innings of relief.

Princeton falls to 12-15 overall and 6-2 in the Ivy League with the losses. The Tigers visit Monmouth on Wednesday and will play a four-game series at Penn next weekend. Princeton and Penn are both 6-2 atop the Gehrig Division standings.
