Baseball Makes Midweek Trip to Monmouth on Wednesday
April 12, 2011 | Baseball
The Tigers split four games in New England over the weekend, winning twice on Saturday at Harvard and falling twice on Sunday at Dartmouth. The wins at Harvard extended the Tigers' win streak to nine games before dropping the opener on Sunday. The nine-game win streak was Princeton's longest since the 2000 season when the Tigers also won nine in a row. Princeton now sits at 12-15 overall and 6-2 in the Ivy League.
Princeton's split has the Tigers even with Penn in the Gehrig standings following the completion of the Gehrig-Rolfe crossover weekends. The pair will face off against one another this coming weekend with all four games being played at Penn.
The Tigers will visit Monmouth first however and look to win their fourth straight non-league game on Wednesday. Princeton has won its first two mid-week games since returning north following Spring Break, picking up wins at Seton Hall and Rutgers of the Big East. Lefty Michael Fagan will make his second straight midweek start for the Tigers. He allowed five earned runs over 3.2 innings last Tuesday at Rutgers.
Princeton and Monmouth have played 15 times since the 2000 season with the Hawks holding an 11-4 record in the span, including wins in the last eight meetings. Princeton last topped the Hawks in the 2004 season at home by a 12-5 score. Last season Monmouth defeated Princeton 24-7 at Clarke Field.
Monmouth is currently 16-13 overall and 11-5 atop the Northeast Conference standings. The Hawks took three of four at Quinnipiac in a league series last weekend and topped Central Connecticut State in three of four a week earlier at home, also in a league series. The only common opponents between Princeton and Monmouth are VCU and Rutgers. Monmouth took two of three from VCU and defeated Rutgers 3-2. Princeton split two games at VCU and also defeated Rutgers. Monmouth visits Rider on Tuesday prior to Wednesday's game.
