#1 Tiger Lightweights Head To Cayuga For Platt Cup Showdown With Cornell
April 14, 2011 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The last three Ivy League men's lightweight rowing champions will meet on the Cayuga Inlet Saturday morning to compete for the Platt Cup, with the first varsity race scheduled for 9:40 a.m.
Princeton has been perfect through the 2010-11 academic year, including wins at both the Head of the Charles and the Princeton Chase in the fall. When the 2011 regular season opened, Princeton stayed in winning forms with victories over both Navy and MIT in the season opener and over both Georgetown and Columbia last weekend. Its top three varsity boats and its freshman eight have combined to go 12-0 on the season, with the novice eight matching the varsity eight with an impressive 4-0 start.
Princeton is ranked No. 1 in the latest national poll, and it earned eight of the 11 first-place votes. One of the votes went to Cornell, which will make its season debut Saturday after last weekend's race at Penn was cancelled. Prior to Princeton's run of two straight EARC and IRA championships, Cornell had won two of the previous three Ivy League titles, including one in 2008.
Princeton has won the Platt Cup 34 times in this regatta that dates back to 1967, while Cornell has won nine. The Tigers, who have won 24 of their last 25 regular season races, have won three straight Platt Cup regattas.
Following this weekend, Princeton will head south to the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia to take on Penn and Georgetown for the Wood-Hammond Cup.
