Top-Ranked Men's Lights Prepare For Penn, Georgetown On Schuylkill
April 20, 2011 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The top-ranked Princeton men's lightweight crew, coming off an impressive win over No. 4 Cornell last weekend, will try to retain The Wood-Hammond Cup this weekend when it takes on No. 5 Georgetown and No. 10 Penn on the Schuylkill River.
Princeton is 5-0 on the season, including a hard-fought win over Georgetown three weeks ago in the Fosburgh Cup regatta. Princeton won that first varsity race by less than four seconds and followed with wins in the 2V and freshman eight. The Tigers are also 2-0 in the Ivy League, with wins over both Cornell and Columbia this season.
While the Princeton first varsity is competing for The Wood-Hammond Cup, the rest of its squad will be looking to continue their strong seasons. The Tiger 2V is 4-0 on the season, 2-0 in the Ivy League, while the novice eight is 4-1 after last week's close loss to unbeaten Cornell.
Princeton has won The Wood-Hammond Cup (which is competed for between Princeton and Penn only) 55 times in 67 regatts, including the initial competition in 1941. The Tigers have won the Cup five consecutive times, including a 9.3-second win over Penn last season.
Princeton will complete its regular season on the Charles River next weekend when it competes for The Goldthwait and Vogel Cups against both No. 2 Harvard and No. 3 Yale.
