April 21, 2011 | Baseball
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (4/21/11) - The Princeton baseball team fell 5-1 on Thursday afternoon in non-league action at Monmouth. The host Hawks went ahead with two unearned runs in the second inning and never trailed despite being outhit by Princeton in the game.
Monmouth broke open a scoreless game with two unearned runs in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Princeton answered with a single run in the top of the fourth to get within a run. Sam Mulroy hit a one-out double down the line to left field and scored on an Alex Flink single. It would be the lone run of the game for the Tigers, who had eight hits in the game and had base runners in every inning. Jonathan York, Mulroy and Flink all had two hits in the game. Mulroy's double was the only extra-base hit for Princeton.
Monmouth added two runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth as it built its lead up to 5-1.
Kevin Link started for Princeton and retired all six batters he faced over two innings as he made his first appearance in a month since feeling discomfort in his arm in an outing on March 20. He struck out two in his two innings. Michael Fagan suffered the loss after surrendering two unearned runs over two innings. Matt Welsh and Ryan Makis were each touched for runs while David Palms and A.J. Goetz both provided scoreless relief work.
Princeton fell to 15-17 overall with the loss. The first-place Tigers host Columbia for a four-game Ivy League and Gehrig Division series at Clarke Field this weekend.
