April 28, 2011 | Softball
Cornell will visit the Princeton softball team as the Tigers close their home schedule for the 2011 season with a doubleheader Friday at 2 p.m.
The Big Red (24-18-1, 9-5 Ivy) hold a three-game lead over Penn in the Ivy South standings, while the Tigers (14-24, 5-11) are five games out. Penn and Columbia will split a four-game series between Philadelphia and New York this weekend, while the Tigers and Big Red will head to Ithaca for a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader Sunday.
In the Ivy North, Harvard has a four-game lead over Dartmouth for the division and Cornell for hosting the Ivy League Championship Series next weekend.
Sophomore Lizzy Pierce remains Princeton's top hitter with her .330 batting average, adding to that with two home runs during Tuesday's doubleheader with Columbia to tie her with junior Kelsey VandeBergh and sophomore Alex Peyton with four home runs on the season. Peyton picked up the win in the circle in Tuesday's nightcap, putting her within one win of the team lead, now at 5-12, as sophomore Liza Kuhn takes a 6-6 record into the weekend.
A pair of seniors anchor Cornell in the circle, with Elizabeth Dalrymple taking a 16-6 record and 1.59 ERA into the series while Ali Tomlinson is 7-6 with a 3.53 ERA. At the plate, senior Melissa Amiraian is hitting .417 while two of the other four Cornell batters with an average better than .300, sophomores Erin Belles and Kristen Towne, co-lead the team with six home runs apiece.
The twinbill will mark the final games at '95 Field for Princeton's two seniors, infielder Megan Weidrick and pitcher Michelle Tolfa.
