Baseball Splits With Cornell; Seals Up Gehrig Division Title
April 29, 2011 | Baseball
Princeton will learn of its opponent over the weekend as Yale and Dartmouth entered the weekend tied atop the Rolfe Division. Yale was swept by Brown on Friday so the teams are now tied in the win column although Dartmouth had two games in hand with the Big Green playing its games this weekend on Saturday and Sunday.
Game 1 (Box Score)
Jadd Schmeltzer pitched a gem for Cornell in the opener as he scattered four hits over seven innings and fanned five Princeton batters in the shutout win. Princeton got its leadoff batter on base in each of the first four innings but couldn't push across a run.
The Tigers best chance came in the fourth when Princeton put two on with no outs, but a failed sac bunt and a strike-em-out-throw-em-out double play ended the Princeton threat and Schmeltzer rolled from there.
Cornell scored two runs on four hits and a Princeton error as Frank Hager and Ben Swinford singled home runs. Matt Bowman settled down after the first and retired 13 batters in order before Mickey Brodsky led off the sixth with a single, which was followed by a two-run homer for Hager. Tom D'Alessandro added a solo homer in the seventh.
Bowman, Sam Mulroy, Steve Harrington and Jonathan York all had hits for Princeton in the loss. Bowman allowed five runs on seven hits in seven innings. He fanned eight.
Game 2 (Box Score)
Princeton took the nightcap 8-5 after breaking open a tie game with four runs in the seventh inning. Cornell led the game 1-0 after one, but Princeton went ahead with three runs in the second inning. Cornell went back ahead 4-3 in the third and Princeton answered in the bottom of the inning.
In Princeton's big inning the Tigers took advantage of two Cornell errors, coupled with two hits to plate four unearned runs. With one out Bowman walked and he scored as Mike Ford and John Mishu both reached on errors. After a double steal, both scored on a Mulroy double to left and Mulroy would score on Harrington's sac fly.
A double and single to begin the game gave Cornell a 1-0 lead but Princeton added three runs in the second to go ahead. Ryan Albert was hit by a pitch with one out and Bobby Geren singled to put two on. Bowman then plated both runs with a triple to right center and he later scored on a Mishu single.
Cornell took advantage of three Princeton errors to go ahead 4-3 in the top of the third, but Princeton evened the score immediately. Harrington struck out on a pitch in the dirt but reached base as the third strike went to the backstop. He then went to third on Alex Flink's single and would score on a wild pitch.
Princeton then went ahead 8-4 in the seventh, but Cornell got an unearned run back in the eighth and would stranded three before reliever Matt Grabowski induced an inning-ending fielder's choice.
Zak Hermans improved to 5-1 with the win. He allowed two earned runs on eight hits in 7.1 inninsgs with six strikeouts. David Palms and Matt Grabowski helped Hermans finish the eighth and A.J. Goetz got the Big Red in order in the ninth for the save.

Princeton is now 19-20 overall and 13-5 in the Ivy League. The Tigers complete the Ivy schedule on Sunday at Cornell.
