Top-Ranked Open Women Compete For '75 Cup On Charles River
April 07, 2011 | Women's Rowing - Open
The last time the Princeton open crew was on the Charles River, it was winning the prestigious Head of the Charles competition last October. The top-ranked Tigers will look to match that success Saturday morning when they take on Harvard and Cornell in The Class of 1975 Cup.
Princeton, which has been ranked No. 1 for two weeks, retained the Class of 1975 Cup last season with a nearly 18-second win over Cornell on Cayuga Inlet in Ithaca. The Tigers swept each of the top three races last season by at least 10 seconds and has won The Class of 1975 Cup six of the last seven years. Since the competition began in 1976, Princeton leads the field with 22 victories, followed by Harvard with 11.
Princeton has been perfect in each of its top three (1V, 2V, V4) boats this season, which has included victories over No. 6 Brown, No. 8 Michigan State, Rutgers and Navy.
Cornell comes into the weekend ranked 13th nationally; the Big Red made a five-spot jump in the standings after its victory over reigning Ivy League champion Yale. Harvard is ranked 18th overall and moved up two spots after losing a very tight race against Brown.
