Men's Swimming/Diving Names Trio Of Captains, Announces Award Winners
May 06, 2011 | Men's Swimming and Diving
The Princeton men's swimming and diving team proudly celebrated a wild, and ultimately thrilling, season at its end-of-year banquet Thursday night. Five swimmers earned team awards, while three All-Ivy standouts were named tri-captains for the 2011-12 season.
Rising seniors Jon Christensen, Colin Cordes and Michael Monovoukas will serve as captains next season, when Princeton looks for its first run of four straight titles in a 20-year span. Christensen earned multiple first-team All-Ivy League honors after winning the 200 breast, 200 IM and being part of Princeton wins in the 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay and 800 free relay. Cordes won the individual Ivy League title in the 200 back and was also part of the winning 200 free, 800 free and 400 medley relay wins, while Monovoukas was on the winning 200 free, 200 medley and 400 medley winning relays.
The following were the individual award winners for the 2010-11 championship season.
The War Memorial Swimming TrophyThis award is presented in memory of eight former members of Princeton swimming teams who died in World War II to that senior member of the University swimming squad who has made the outstanding contribution during upperclass years, to the sport through diligence in studies, devotion to swimming, and excellence in performance.
Colin Hanna was a tri-captain this season and won the 400 IM for a Princeton team that won the Ivy League title by only 5.5 points over Harvard. He was the seventh-highest scoring individual swimmer in the championship meet, and the third highest-scorer for Princeton.
The William B. Nash Memorial Trophy
This award is presented in memory of William B. Nash Princeton class of '55 by his teammates of the Class of 1955 for outstanding sportsmanship and performance by a freshman.
Paul Nolle III cracked the Top 10 in individual scoring as a freshman during the 2011 Ivy League Championships, including a second-place finish in the 1,000 that helped him earn All-Ivy honors. He also added third-place finishes in the 500 and 1650.
The John Alan Swabey Memorial Trophy
Presented in memory of John Alan Swabey '55 by his teammates for contribution through spirit, sportsmanship, and improvement in swimming.
Rory Loughran, a Princeton native, was one of the Tigers' most improved swimmers this season. He cut nine seconds off his time in the 200 free, and he improved his 500 free by 12 seconds from the Big Al Open to his final swim of the season.
The Dermod F. Quinn Memorial Award
Presented in memory of Dermod F. Quinn '69 by the swimming team, coaches, and alumni to that member of the swimming team who best illustrates the qualities of intense determination and effort in workouts exemplified by Dermod F. Quinn and who has provided a constant source of inspiration by his performance in practice.
Eric Materniak was a tenacious worker through his first year at Princeton, and that showed in several time drops among his events. He was part of the conference team as a freshman and made the 400 IM final. His biggest swim might have come on the final day, when he scored big team points with a gutsy win in the 'B' final of the 200 breast.
The Matthew R. Weiner Class of 2002, C. Rob Orr Award
Established in 2002 in memory of Matthew R. Weiner and to honor C. Rob Orr, coach extraordinaire. This “Muscle, Mind, and Heart” award is awarded to that senior member of the Princeton Varsity Swim Team who consistently demonstrates those qualities shared by Matt and Rob of inspirational dedication with integrity, a challenging intensity and a genuine respect for himself, his teammates and his university.
Colin Hanna shared this award with fellow senior tri-captain Patrick Biggs, who was never able to return to his original form following an illness he dealt with last season. That didn't stop Biggs from demonstrating true leadership, especially during Princeton's win at the Ivy championship meet.
