Harry Flaherty '11 Goes Marching In; Versatile Tight End Signs With Saints
July 27, 2011 | Football
Though he had to wait out the extended NFL lockout, Harry Flaherty '11 will soon be playing football again. The two-year Princeton starter was one of 20 undrafted free agents to sign a contract Wednesday with the New Orleans Saints.
"I am excited that Harry Flaherty has signed with the New Orleans Saints and has an opportunity to play in the NFL," head coach Bob Surace said. "His versatility as a tight end, fullback and on special teams will help him as he pursues a spot on their team.
"He has made great strides in his development as a player, and his work with Jason Gallucci and our strength staff was evident in his outstanding pro-day tryouts with the NFL scouts and coaches this spring," Surace added.
A two-year starter, Flaherty recorded 43 receptions for 405 yards, a 9.4-yard average, and caught 25 passes as a senior. This past season, he was the team's co-recipient of the Dr. Harry Roemer McPhee Award, given for qualities of durability and fortitude.
And while a quarterback controversy in New Orleans is unlikely, Flaherty does leave with one of the greatest career quarterback efficiency ratings in Princeton history (614.8); he completed his one attempt last season for a 22-yard touchdown against Harvard.
