Richmond Holds Off Field Hockey Team 3-2
September 11, 2011 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON (9/11/11) - The Princeton field hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to Richmond on Sunday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium. Richmond goalie Anna Zarkoski made 10 saves and the Spiders held Princeton scoreless on 13 penalty corners in the game.
Richmond never trailed in the game and took advantage of its chances to earn the win. Chelsea Davies gave the Spiders a 1-0 lead 16:50 into the game when her backhand shot from the top of the circle sailed into the Princeton net. The Tigers countered quickly, evening the game less than two minutes later, scoring on a penalty stroke from Charlotte Krause.
Play leveled out and it looked the game would go to halftime tied at 1-1, but Richmond scored on the counter attack with 14 seconds left in the half. Jackie Gyger gained possession in the midfield and ran the ball all the way into the circle and down to the goal line, before sending a crossing pass that Christina Amorose tapped into the Princeton net for a 2-1 Richmond lead at the half.
Neither team was able to sustain pressure early in the second half. The Tigers began to put pressure on the Richmond goal as the half progressed as the Tigers earned eight of their 13 corners in the second half.
Princeton had a corner in the 55th minute but Amanda Bird's shot was blocked, which sent the ball into the midfield and set up a Richmond counter. Blair Kline collected the ball and ran it onto the Princeton side of the field and would find Katelin Peterson alone in front of the Princeton goal for her second goal of the season and a 3-1 Richmond lead.
The Tigers got one of the goals back with five minutes left to play when Allison Evans netted her team-leading third goal of the season. Sydney Kirby brought the ball into the circle and drew out Zarkoski. She then chipped it past the Richmond goalie and Evans knocked it into the back of the net.
Princeton had two more corners in the final five minutes looking to tie the game but couldn't crack Zarkoski as she made her 10th save on a blast from Molly Goodman and a shot from Bird went wide in the final minute.
Princeton drops to 2-2 overall with the loss. The Tigers open the Ivy League slate next Saturday at Dartmouth.
