Shorthanded Wrestling Squad Drops 28-6 Home Loss To Columbia
February 11, 2012 | Wrestling
Without the majority of his envisioned starting lineup due to either injury or illness, Princeton wrestling head coach Chris Ayres watched a youth-laden squad struggle during a 28-6 home loss to Columbia Friday night at Dillon Gym.
Princeton, coming off its 25-14 win over nationally ranked Harvard last weekend, got victories from #13 Adam Krop (141) and senior Kurt Brendel in the loss to Columbia. The Tigers fell to 6-11 overall, 1-3 in the Ivy League.
Columbia got out to a quick start with wins at both 125 and 133. Freshman Ryan Cash, who had a big win in Princeton's upset at Harvard, dropped an 8-4 decision to Robert Dyer, while Columbia's 20-win standout Ryan Gilchrist scored an 11-3 major decision over joe DeQuinzio.
Krop cut the deficit in half with a 6-0 shutout of Matt Bystol. The win moved him to 27-6 on the season; he has won 15 of his last 16 matches, including his third-place finish at the 2011 Midlands Championships.
Neither sophomore Seth Hazleton nor freshman Kyle Roddy has wrestled in a dual meet this season, but both were called into action when veteran starters Zach Bintliff and Daniel Kolodzik were unable to go. Both challenges were raised, as Columbia sent out a pair of wrestlers who were both 10 matches over the .500 mark. At 149, Steve Santos scored a 10-2 win over Hazleton, while O'Hara earned a 13-2 major over Roddy.
Fellow freshman Rich Eva dropped a 5-1 decision to Eren Civan at 165, while senior Andy Lowy fell 10-5 to Columbia's Stephen West, who has a team-best 25 victories this season. Both Lowy and West could be prime challengers for the EIWA Championships, which will be held March 3-4 at Jadwin Gym.
After sophomore Dan Santoro dropped a 4-0 decision to Shane Hughes at 184, Brendel scored a wild 10-9 victory over Nick Mills for his 17th win of the season. After missing last season, Brendel has done a great job of shaking off any rust and is peaking heading into the league championships in a very deep weight class.
Columbia closed the match with an 11-2 win from Kevin Lester over Bobby Grogan at heavyweight.
