March 11, 2012 | Softball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Using three home runs in an eight-run fourth inning, the Princeton softball team beat Rhode Island 9-4 Sunday to close the Maryland Round Robin.
Two of the shots came from freshmen, including a three-run homer by Sarah McGowan and a two-run shot by Alyssa Schmidt, followed by another two-run shot from Alex Peyton. The junior also had two home runs in Saturday's doubleheader.
Sophomore Tory Roberts provided Princeton's first RBI, a run-scoring single in the second to put Princeton on the board, and junior Candy Button started off the big fourth inning with her own run-scoring single.
Freshman Meredith Brown held Rhode Island (4-11) scoreless for the first four innings before giving up three runs in the fifth, and junior Liza Kuhn came in to close out the last two frames.
The Tigers, now 2-7, will head on their annual spring break trip to California for 11 games beginning Friday.
