Softball Gets Saturday Split in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Following Akron's 3-2 come-from-behind win against the Princeton softball team Saturday morning in California's capital, the Tigers bounced back for a 5-3 victory over Colorado State in the afternoon.
Game 1: Akron 3, Princeton 2
The Tigers pulled ahead by two runs after two-and-a-half innings on an Alex Peyton RBI single in the first and a Nicole Ontiveros home run in the third, but Akron scored the final three runs in its 3-2 win.
Three singles and an error in the bottom of the third helped the Zips (11-9) knot it at 2-2 before Akron manufactured another run in the fourth to pull ahead. Princeton (2-8) had a runner in each of the final three innings but couldn't bring home the tying run.
Peyton (1-3) pitched the first four innings before Liza Kuhn came on and threw two scoreless frames.
Game 2: Princeton 5, Colorado State 3
It was Princeton's turn to play the comeback role in the day's second contest, scoring three runs in the third and two more in the fifth for the 5-3 win over Colorado State.
Meredith Brown started in the circle but gave up two hits and a run before giving way to Liza Kuhn (1-2), who gave up a walk before striking out the side.
The Rams (11-16) got a run off of Kuhn in the second to take a 2-0 lead, but Alyssa Schmidt blasted a three-run home run to give the Tigers a 3-2 advantage in the top of the third. Two walks and a single off Kuhn helped CSU tie it in the bottom of the third.
Princeton (3-8) went ahead for good when Nicole Ontiveros hit a two-run home run in the fifth, her second four-bagger of the day. Kuhn finished with 10 strikeouts and at least one coming in six of the seven innings. The strikeout total was a career best for the junior Kuhn, who had two nine-strikeout games last season against Cornell and Lehigh at Class of 1895 Field.
