Undefeated Louisville Headlines Softball's Four Foes in Sacramento
March 15, 2012 | Softball
Taking its annual spring break trip, the Princeton softball team will head to California for 11 games in the span of nine days.
The first four of those games will take place in Sacramento, Calif., at the Capital Classic, an event in which Princeton also participated in 2006 and 2008. It will be a return to the home state of nine of the 15 Tigers on the roster.
Princeton will start against Louisville, undefeated at 21-0 and ranked No. 14 in the nation in the NFCA poll, at 5 p.m. ET Friday. Saturday, Princeton will face Akron (10-9) at noon ET before taking on Colorado State (10-13, through Wednesday) at 4 p.m. ET. Princeton will close the event Sunday against Sacramento State (14-8) at 4 p.m. ET
Games at No. 2 California and Saint Mary's and four games hosted by Pacific will follow later in the week.
The Tigers enter the weekend at 2-7 and with an Ivy League Player of the Week honoree in freshman Alyssa Schmidt, who hit .625 (10-16) over the weekend. Schmidt is the team's top hitter overall on the season at .444 with senior Nicole Ontiveros also starting off well at .387. Junior Alex Peyton has three of the team's six home runs and 12 of the 38 RBIs.
Princeton's innings in the circle have been divided almost evenly between rookie Meredith Brown (1-3, 4.55), Peyton (1-2, 4.77) and junior Liza Kuhn (0-2, 5.44).
The spring trip is Princeton's final opportunity to tune up for the Ivy League season, which will begin March 30 at Class of 1895 Field against Dartmouth.
