No. 2 California Yields Little in Win over Softball
March 21, 2012 | Softball
BERKELEY, Calif. -- Second-ranked California was stingy in its 8-0, five-inning win over the Princeton softball team Tuesday, giving up just three hits.
Bears pitcher Valerie Arioto didn't walk a batter and struck out seven, including fanning the side in order in the first. Cara Worden had Princeton's first hit with a two-out single in the second inning, preceding a leadoff single for Tory Roberts in the third and another leadoff single for Kelsey VandeBergh in the fourth.
A home run was part of each of Cal's three scoring innings. An Arioto home run brought home two runs in the first before a Danielle Henderson solo shot was one-half of Cal's two runs in the second. Cheyenne Cordes had a two-run shot in the fifth, half of Cal's four runs in that inning to invoke the run rule.
Liza Kuhn took the ball for Princeton for all five innings, giving up eight runs on nine hits without a walk and three stirkeouts.
Princeton will stay in the Bay Area for a doubleheader at Saint Mary's at 4 p.m. Eastern Time Wednesday.
