Baseball to Face Defending National Champion No. 2 South Carolina

After a weekend split to open the 2012 campaign, the Princeton baseball team will travel to Columbia, S.C. to play a three-game series against two-time defending National Champion No. 2 South Carolina. The Tigers (2-2) will face the Gamecocks (10-1) from Mar. 9-11.

Last Time Out: The Tigers opened the year behind five scoreless Zak Hermans innings and 15 hits, to drop Florida Atlantic, 11-4, on Mar. 2. The following day, the Owls responded with a doubleheader sweep, before Princeton gutted out an 8-5 win to conclude the series on Mar. 4.
On Deck: Princeton remains on the road, traveling next to Richmond for a three-game series from Mar. 16-18. The Tigers play their first 17 games on the road prior to opening up the home half of the 2012 schedule on Mar. 31 versus Dartmouth.
Hermans Named Ivy Pitcher of the Week: Pitcher Zak Hermans was named Ivy League Pitcher of the Week after helping guide Princeton to an 11-4 season-opening win over Florida Atlantic on Mar. 2. The junior threw 5.0 scoreless innings, while tying a career-high with eight strikeouts. He also only gave up two hits in 18 batters faced.
Hermans, the No. 4 pitcher in the Ivy League after week one, was also one of 12 players nationally named to the CollegeBaseball360 Primetime Performers of the Week.
Business as Usual for Mulroy: Senior co-captain Sam Mulroy returned to action and picked up where he left off last season. In four starts, he's hitting .389, 7-for-18, and has five runs and a double. After one week of work, he's in the top-20 in hitting in the Ivy League.
Thomsen and Thomson: Freshmen shortstop Blake Thomsen and pitcher Danny Thomson had strong debuts at FAU for the Tigers last weekend. Infielder Thomsen saw action in three games and made a start. He went 2-for-6 (.333), while tallying three RBI and a pair of runs. On the mound, Thomson threw 3.1 relief innings in game one of the Mar. 3 doubleheader against the Owls. He allowed only one hit and threw three strikeouts in 10 batters faced.
Scouting No. 2 South Carolina: The second-ranked Gamecocks of South Carolina are coming off an 8-1 midweek victory over UNC Asheville at home. USC is 10-1 on the year, seeing its only blemish on Mar. 4 in a 6-5 loss at then-No. 15 Clemson. The Gamecock offense is led by Christian Walker, who is hitting .316 (12-for-38), and has 13 RBI, six runs, a double and a home run in 11 games. Of the starters, he is the only player to be hitting above .300. Defensively, South Carolina has seen 16 different pitchers take the mound. Michael Roth (1-0) has thrown a team-leading 20.1 innings and owns a 0.89 ERA. Over three starts, he's thrown 20 strikeouts, while giving up eight hits, five walks and two runs.
