Former Princeton Tight End Harry Flaherty '11 Signs With Dallas Cowboys
August 16, 2012 | Football
Harry Flaherty, a two-year starter at tight end for Princeton, signed with the Dallas Cowboys Tuesday. The move reunites Flaherty with a pair of his uncles, who just happen to also be two of Princeton's all-time greats.
Flaherty is the nephew of Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett '88, as well as the nephew of Dallas tight ends coach John Garrett. The latter will serve as his position coach; Flaherty, who had signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent last year, recorded 43 receptions for 405 yards, including 25 catches as a senior tight end for the Tigers.
“There were a few teams on the radar, but I kind of just thought because of their tight end situation, the family situation, that wouldn't really be an option,” Flaherty said in a release from the Dallas Cowboys. “Then injuries opened it up. It's definitely a crash course, but I think I had a tune-up last year when I had to go to camp right after the lockout ended with New Orleans and had to learn the playbook there quickly, too,” Flaherty said. “So it's definitely a whirlwind, but I feel ready to handle it.”
An injury suffered by Jason Witten in Dallas' preseason opener left a spot open at the position, and Flaherty is in camp trying to earn a spot on the roster.
