Coming off its series victory over Penn, the Princeton baseball team heads to St. John's on Wednesday, Apr. 17 live on ESPN3 at 6 p.m. The midweek meeting marks the final regular season non-conference road game for the Tigers (11-21, 8-4 Ivy).
Last Time Out: Princeton went 3-1 at Penn last weekend, opening the series with a 7-2 victory behind a complete game performance from pitcher Zak Hermans. A ninth inning rally was not enough in game two, as the Quakers split the day with an 8-7 win.
The Tigers closed out the series with a sweep on Apr. 14, again commanding game one with a 7-1 victory behind Mike Ford's complete game. He retired Penn's first 12 batters and gave up only two hits. The series finale proved to be a roller coaster, as Princeton held a 6-3 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, things unraveled and the Quakers tied things up to force extra innings. A two-out Alec Keller home run would be enough to propel Princeton to a 7-6 victory.
On Deck: Princeton will look to take over the Gehrig Division standings in a critical four-game series with first-place Columbia. The Tigers and Lions square off in a pair of doubleheaders from Apr. 20-21 at Clarke Field.
Live on ESPN3: Fans nationally will be able to catch the Tigers live on ESPN3 at St. John's on Wednesday. This is the team's first national broadcast this year.
Divisional Standings: The Tigers (8-4) are one game behind first-place Columbia (9-3) in the Gehrig Division following their 3-1 weekend at. After entering the weekend in a three-way tie for second with Cornell and Penn, Princeton now sits in sole possession of second.
Pitching Success:
• Mike Ford: Improved to 3-0 with complete game 7-1 victory on Apr. 14. He owns team-best 1.15 ERA over team-high 47 innings pitched. Opponents are hitting .192 against the junior righty.
• Zak Hermans: Earned his third straight complete game win to open series at Penn, 7-2, on Apr. 13. He has thrown a team-high 44 strikeouts spanning 42.1 innings. In Ivy play, he has 1.29 ERA, struck out 21 and batters are hitting .173 against.
• Danny Thomson: The sophomore reliever earned his first career win in Princeton's 7-6 10-inning victory at Penn on Apr. 14. He went 1.1 hitless shutout innings, tossing a strikeout and a walk.
Scouting St. John's: St. John's will face Albany on Tuesday, prior to playing the Tigers in its second midweek contest. The Red Storm sit at 14-21, 4-7 BIG EAST and are coming off a 2-1 weekend at Georgetown.
Frank Schwindel leads the offense with a .319 batting average (45-for-141), tallying 34 RBI and 24 runs. He is one of four SJU players hitting above .300 and has a .475 slugging and .338 on-base percentage.
Mike Sheppard III (1-1) will earn his fifth start Wednesday, marking his eighth appearance this year. The right-handed pitcher has a 6.11 ERA and 10 strikeouts over 17.2 innings. Opponents have tallied 26 hits, 12 earned runs and are hitting .351 against.
