Softball Announces 2014 Schedule
January 04, 2014 | Softball
The Princeton softball program has announced its schedule for the 2014 season, the second under head coach Lisa Sweeney. Last season, Sweeney guided the Tigers to their best overall record since 2006 at 27-19 and their most Ivy League wins since 2008 at 12-8.
"We are looking forward to opening 2014 facing strong non-league opponents in preparation for the always competitive Ivy schedule," Sweeney said. "We are particularly eyeing our spring-break trip to Northern California, which will be exciting for our student-athletes from the West Coast and our strong alumni base in the Bay Area. We have critical Ivy contests at home to complete the regular season in April. We hope to build on the many positives that came out of 2013 this spring. The goal as always is to play in May."
The new season will give the current group of Tigers, which includes just two seniors among its 19 members, a chance to develop into new roles. Princeton returns just more than a third of its innings in the circle from last season, led by sophomore Shanna Christian (10-5, 3.00 ERA). At the plate, Princeton brings back five of the six players who hit over .300 last season, with junior Rachel Rendina's 50 hits pacing the squad. Defensively, 10 players started at least half of the team's 46 games, and six of those players return. Princeton will have new starters at least at the corner infield positions and two of the three outfield spots, having graduated their usual 2013 starters in those places.
