LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The 10th-ranked Princeton University men's water polo team dropped to 11-2 on the season with a 16-3 loss to No. 1 UCLA at the Spieker Aquatics Center.
Snapping the Tigers' five-game win streak, the Bruins remained unbeaten at 16-0 on the season, while improving to 9-0 all-time against the Orange and Black.
Opening up the scoring at the 4:13 mark of the first quarter, Princeton's Drew Hoffenberg skipped a shot into the Bruin cage. With just 50 seconds remaining in the period, UCLA's Danny McClintick put the home team on the board.
Building on the momentum in the second while on a man advantage, Daniel Lenhart set up Matt Farmer for a go-ahead goal at 6:16. Catching Princeton on a counter attack with just under five minutes remaining in the half, Farmer struck again to make it 3-1. Once again on the counter with just over two minutes left in the frame, Paul Reynolds found the back of the net. Capping off the first half scoring, Alex Roelse beat Tiger goalie Vojislav Mitrovic with 50 seconds on the clock to make it 5-1.
Getting the UCLA off to a fast start in the third, Lenhart and Chris Fahlsing netted a pair of scores 1:44 apart to stretch the margin to 7-1. Snapping a string of seven unanswered Bruin goals, Jordan Colina got on the board to trim the Princeton deficit to five. Coming right back, Ryder Roberts recorded his 10th goal of the season before three Cristiano Mirarchi markers in the final two minutes of the third made it 11-2.
After Lenhart posted his second goal of the night to pad the Bruin cushion, Connor McGoldrick cashed in on a 6-on-4 advantage to momentarily stem the UCLA tide. Continuing to push forward, the Bruins Jesse Camou, Jack Grover, Christopher Meinhold and David Culpan came up with goals in the final three minutes of regulation to close out the scoring.
Princeton will remain on the West Coast to compete in the Bruins' SoCal Tournament. The Tigers will open tourney play on Saturday, Oct. 11 against No. 7 Pacific.
