Men's Water Polo Earns Split Against No. 7 Pacific, No. 16 LMU

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 10th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team opened play at the 2014 SoCAL Tournament hosted by UCLA with a 12-7 loss to No. 7 University of the Pacific. Rebounding in the afternoon session, the Tigers held off No. 16 Loyola Marymount University, 9-7.
Improving to 12-3 on the season, the Orange and Black return to action tomorrow at 2:45 p.m. (EST) against No. 11 University of California-Davis. Should Princeton prevail, the Tigers final tournament match would take place at 7:45 p.m. (EST). In the event of a loss, Princeton would return to the pool at 6:30 p.m. (EST).

Despite a hat trick from senior co-captain Drew Hoffenberg, Princeton dropped its opening match at the SoCAL Tournament to No. 7 Pacific, 12-7. Down 2-1 after the first and 5-4 at the intermission, the Tigers were outscored 7-3 over the final 16 minutes.
Also recording an assist, Hoffenberg added two steals and drew a pair of ejections. Jordan Colina, Curtis Fink, Kayj Shannon and Jovan Jeremic accounted for Princeton's other four scores, with Colina going 3-1 on sprints. Fink paced the team with three steals.
Stopping a pair of shots in the first, goalie Vojislav Mitrovic recorded four saves in the second period. Adding three more stops in the second half, the rookie netminder finished with nine saves.

Salvaging a split on the opening day of UCLA's SoCAL Tournament, Princeton held off No. 16 Loyola Marymount, 9-7.
Notching the game's first goal, Thomas Nelson found the back of the Lions' cage at the 7:13 mark of the opening quarter. With LMU's Emanuel Di Stasio tying the game with 24 seconds left in the frame, Drew Hoffenberg and Curtis Fink tallied back-to-back scores to open the second period.
Coming right back, the Lions' Milutin Mitrovic and Jon Beck helped key a 3-0 Loyola run, recording consecutive goals before Di Stasio gave LMU its first lead at 3:22. After Nelson and Beck exchanged tallies just 19 seconds apart, Jovan Jeremic made it 5-5 with 1:19 to go in the half. With just two seconds left on the clock, Nelson struck again to stake the Tigers to a slim 6-5 margin at the intermission.
Building on the momentum coming out of the break, Jeremic scored at the 1:50 mark of the third to make it 7-5. Answering 33 seconds later, the Lions' Matt Cuozzo pulled LMU back within one. After Liam Jennis tied it at 7-7 with 4:06 remaining in regulation, Hoffenberg came up with two big goals to put Princeton up for good.
Nelson and Hoffenberg led the Princeton attack with three goals apiece, while Jeremic and Fink combined for the three other Tiger scores. Making eight first quarter saves, Vojislav Mitrovic tacked on eight more stops over the final three periods to match a personal-best with 16.
