PRINCETON, N.J. (10/4/14) - A Matt Danilack header off a free kick in the 93rd minute gave Dartmouth the 2-1 overtime victory of Princeton in the Ivy League men's soccer opener on Saturday, Oct. 4 on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
The last three meetings between the two teams have resulted in 2-1 decisions, this time however, it didn't go in Princeton's favor. It marked the Big Green's first win at Princeton since 2002.
A Princeton foul just to the left of the 18-yard box gave Dartmouth a free kick. Gabe Hoffman-Johnson put the restart into the middle of the box and Danilack flicked it in for the golden goal.
"We started off really poorly today," Princeton head coach Jim Barlow said. "We had a bad first half and let Dartmouth dictate who the game was going to go. We weren't sharp with our passing, then won it in the midfield and kept trying to get behind us and were effective and we never got on top of things in the first half. The beginning of the second half we started to get it going a little bit, I thought it was better. At the end of the day you can't turn it on and off, have bad 45 minutes and expect to win against a good team."
Dartmouth got on the scoreboard in the 13th minute and had the run of play in the first half. Princeton came on stronger in the second half and overtime looked as if it would be any team's game.
The Big Green got behind the Tigers' defense and passed the ball around with Colin Heffron getting the final touch on the far right side of the field. Hefferon from 22 yards out, sent the ball into the opposite corner of the goal. Dartmouth had two other solid chances to make it 2-0 in the first half, with an Alex Adelabu chip and an Eric Jayne header going just wide.
Junior Ben Hummel made six saves in goal for Princeton had was tested early in the second half. He had a great double punch, the first on a Heffron shot, puching it high and then getting another punch before he could land on Adelabu. Hummel's best save of the night came in the 50th minute with a diving stop at the far post on a strike from Adelabu.
After that Princeton started to take over. Senior Andrew Mills had a great hader that came off a Nico Hurtado corner kick in the 55th minute and continued to threaten and capitalized in the 65th minute on a penalty kick. Senior Cameron Porter was pulled down in the box and converted the penalty kick to knot the game 1-1.
Dartmouth outshot Princeton 15-11 with Stefan Cleveland making two saves in the win for the Big Green. The Tigers took 10 corner kicks to Dartmouth's four.
Princeton hosts in-state rival Rutgers, in a non-conference game, this Tuesday at 7 p.m.
