Football Concludes Non-League Slate With Challenging Showdown At Colgate
October 07, 2014 | Football
While the all-time series is knotted at 25-25-1, Colgate has had the advantage this century in its rivalry with Princeton. The Raiders have won eight of the last 10 meetings between the two programs, including each of the last three. However, history shows that a Princeton team that can win at Andy Kerr Stadium can accomplish some pretty historic things.
Just ask the guys from the 1995 and 2006 Ivy League championship teams.

Princeton makes a return to the Empire State this weekend for its final non-league game of the season against the Colgate Raiders. The game will be streamed live on GoColgateRaiders.com, with Matt Martucci and Ryan Vena calling the game. There is no charge for the live stream.
You can also listen to the game either on the radio (WPRB 103.3 FM) or online at WPRB.com.
Sixth Sense
Colgate has won six of the last seven meetings between these two teams, including each of the last three. They have only played once since Bob Surace took over at Princeton, with Colgate earning a 44-10 victory on Powers Field.
Three-Peat?
Princeton has won three times at Andy Kerr Stadium; two of those victories (1995, 2006) came during two of Princeton's last three Ivy League championships.
The last Tiger win in the series, and the only one in the last decade, was a 27-26 overtime win in Hamilton. Jeff Terrell, who would be named Ivy League Player of the Year, threw for 293 yards and rushed for a TD in overtime, and Tom Methvin tackled Raider quarterback Mike Saraceno on a two-point try to clinch the win.
Patriot Games
Besides being Princeton's last non-league game of the season, this will be the Tigers' only meeting with a Patriot League team this season. Since Bob Surace took over prior to the 2010 season, Princeton has gone 4-7 against the Patriot League; two of those wins (Georgetown and Lafayette came last season). This year, the Patriot League owns a 4-3 record against the Ivy League, including a Colgate win over Cornell.
Quarterly Report
Princeton has scored at least once in every quarter this season, and in 22 of the last 23 quarters dating back to last season. The closest it has come to a scoreless quarter this season came at Columbia, when senior quarterback Quinn Epperly scored on a 1-yard surge as time ran out in the second quarter of Princeton's 38-6 win.
Run To Daylight
Saturday's matchup features two teams with run-heavy offenses. Colgate ranks 16th in the nation with 227.0 yards per game, and it has scored eight rushing touchdowns. Princeton ranks 32nd nationally with 200.3 rushing yards per game, though it has averaged 250.5 in its last two games.
Grounded
While Colgate's ground game will be the best Princeton has seen this season, the Tigers' run defense will easily be the highest-ranked opponent the Raiders have faced this season. After allowing only 27 yards on the ground last weekend, Princeton ranks first in the FCS with only 67.0 rushing yards allowed per game.
30 For 30
Thirty has been the magic number for Princeton recently. In its last 14 games, the Tigers are 10-0 in games they have scored 30 or more points and 0-4 in games they have scored 29 or fewer. Those four losses have either been in season openers or season finales.
Besides its loss to FCS opponent Ball State in the season opener, Colgate hasn't allowed a team to reach 30 points this season; no team has even reached 20 at Andy Kerr Stadium.
The Hunt For An Orange October
Over the last three years, Princeton is 8-1 in October. The Tigers have won their last five October games, a stretch that began with a Patriot League win (Lafayette) last season.
Elite Eight
Junior DiAndre Atwater earned a spot on the Ivy League Honor Roll last weekend after rushing for a season-best 107 yards and a touchdowns in the 38-6 win over Columbia. He scored on a 51-yard run 43 seconds into the second-half to open a 17-6 lead for the Tigers, and he currently leads Princeton with an 8.4 yard-per-carry average and 76.0 per game this season.
Entering the season, Atwater averaged 4.7 yards per carry and 49.1 per game.
Just Quinn, Baby
Senior quarterback Quinn Epperly has rushed for six touchdowns over the last two weeks, including a 1-yard score at Columbia that moved him past Judd Garrett for second on the all-time Princeton list with 33; he needs 16 to tie Keith Elias for first. His 33 touchdowns also ranks 10th most in Ivy League history, and the most ever by a quarterback.
Multiplication Tables
Senior quarterback Quinn Epperly has now accounted for multiple touchdowns in 13 straight games, dating back to last season. In fact, he has accounted for at least three touchdowns in 12 straight games. After leading FCS football last year in points responsible for per game (26.6), he currently ranks sixth nationally (20.0); he also ranks 12th nationally with seven rushing touchdowns.
Kelley Green In The Red Zone
Senior wide receiver Connor Kelley leads Princeton with 14 receptions and 180 receiving yards. After ranking second on the team with six touchdown receptions last season, he caught a 14-yard touchdown pass last weekend and set up another score with a career-long reception of 44 yards. Kelley ranks sixth in the Ivy League in both receptions (4.7) and receiving yards (60.0) per game.
Welcome Matt
Senior Matt Costello ranks eighth all-time at Princeton with 119 career receptions. He needs five more to move into a tie for seventh with Phil Wendler '00. Costello also ranks 11th with 1299 receiving yards, and he needs 86 to move into a tie for 10th with Judd Garrett.
Pick It Up
Princeton entered the Columbia game without a single interception, but two-time first-team All-Ivy League cornerback Anthony Gaffney recorded two interceptions by himself in the 38-6 win. Both interceptions by Gaffney, a preseason All-America honoree, set up scoring drives for Princeton.
Princeton is 2-1 this season, and still hasn't been +1 or better in a single game in turnover margin; in both wins, the Tigers were equal in turnovers, and they were -2 at San Diego. Last season, the Tigers were at least a +1 in six of their eight wins.
I'm Honored
Sophomore Rohan Hylton became Princeton's first Ivy League individual award winner of the season when he was named the Defensive Player of the Week following the 56-17 win over Davidson. Hylton recorded a career-best 11 tackles, including 1.5 for losses, and he became Princeton's first played with double-digit tackles this season; he currently leads Princeton with 19 tackles this season, including five tackles for loss.
At A Loss
Senior co-captain Mike Zeuli, who moved from strong-side linebacker to weak-side in the offseason, has thrived through two weeks. He leads the Ivy League in both sacks (1.0 per game) and tackles for loss (2.3). In the season opener, he had 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks — both career highs. Zeuli, who has played four different positions in his career, was a second-team All-Ivy selection last year.
Conversion Chart
Princeton leads the Ivy League and is just outside the Top 25 nationally in third down conversion defense (32.7%).
Just For Kicks
Nolan Bieck missed four of his first seven field goal attempts last season. Beginning with an overtime conversion at Harvard, Bieck has now made each of his last nine kicks, including at least one in every game the team has played. After making one field goal of at least 40 yards in his first 21 starts, he has made one in each of his last two.
Return To Sender
Dré Nelson ranks 10th nationally and first in the Ivy League with a kickoff return average of 29.7 yards. He opened the Davidson game with a 94-yard touchdown return.
On The Mike
Senior starting offensive lineman Mike Ramos was one of two players in the Ivy League to be nominated for the 2014 Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team. The 182 nominees throughout all divisions of college football represent those who stand out both on and off the field.
National Audience
Starting with next week's game against Brown, Princeton will play five of six games that will be shown to a national audience. The Brown game will be televised on multiple NBC Sports Regional Networks (SNY, TCN Philadelphia, CSN New England, CSN Mid-Atlantic, CSN Bay Area, and CSN California), as well as the Ivy Digital Network. Both the Harvard and Dartmouth home games will be streamed live on ESPN3, while the home game against Penn will be on the NBC Sports Network. Princeton's game at Cornell will be on FOX College Sports.
The Crystal Ball
Following next week's game in Columbia, Princeton will begin a stretch of four home games over the final six weeks when it takes on Brown Oct. 18 at 3:30 pm on Powers Field. Princeton rallied from a 16-0 deficit in Providence to win 38-16 last year, and it shut out Brown 19-0 in the last meeting in Princeton.
The game will be shown locally on both SNY and on The Comcast Network. Tickets are available by calling 609-258-4TIX.
