McCourt, Colautti Advance to Finals at USTA Clay Court Invitational
November 01, 2014 | Men's Tennis
The Princeton duo of Zack McCourt and Tom Colautti advanced to the doubles finals at the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational as members of the Tiger men's tennis team continued play at two events in Florida.
Colautti and McCourt defeated Southern California's Nick Crystal and Max de Vroome in the Orlando-area event's three-set doubles format to advance to a Sunday 1 p.m. final in the B draw against Carlos Benito and Eduardo Segura of Georgia Tech, ranked 20th in the country. Both the A draw and the B draw were bracketed evenly in terms of difficulty.
“We showed great improvement from the first day of this event and I understand from Ryan (assistant Coach Ryan Keckley) we had a much better performance today at the FGCU event," Princeton head coach Billy Pate said. "I think it's fair to say we were both disappointed with our first day of singles at both events. However, we've rebounded well and have continued to make positive strides in doubles. Zack and Tom executed on a few key points in securing a resourceful win against a good USC team. At both events the winds were 25 miles per hour at times and it was crucial to have mental toughness, which I believe our guys demonstrated. It's something positive to build on and we'll look to finish off both events well tomorrow.”
At the Florida Gulf Coast Fall Invitational in Fort Myers, Princeton advanced the doubles pair of Alex Day and Luke Gamble in the A draw. Day and Gamble will face Sebastian Rey and Constantin Schmitz of Tulane in Sunday's final.
Play will begin at the FGCU Fall Invite at 8 a.m. Sunday.
