Zeuli, Bieck Lead All-Ivy Awards; Tigers Claim Most Underclassmen Honored
November 25, 2014 | Football
Senior linebacker Mike Zeuli and junior placekicker Nolan Bieck led a group of 12 Princeton football players who earned 2014 All-Ivy League honors, it was announced Nov. 25 by the league office. Both Zeuli and Bieck earned first-team All-Ivy League honors, and Zeuli was one of seven unanimous selections on the First Team.
Offensive linemen Britt Colcolough and Mike Ramos joined defensive teammates Ty Desiré and Dorian Williams, as well as return specialist Dré Nelson on the Second Team. Scott Carpenter, Anthony Gaffney, Rohan Hylton, Connor Kelley, and Tyler Roth each earned All-Ivy Honorable Mention.
Princeton led all Ivy League teams with five underclassmen (Carpenter, Desiré, Hylton, Roth, and Williams) who earned All-Ivy League honors.
Princeton is also hopeful to make a third straight trip to the Bushnell Cup announcement on Dec. 8; the finalists for both the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year will be announced Dec. 2. Princeton has had an individual winner in each of the last two years; Mike Catapano, currently a member of the Kansas City Chiefs, was the 2012 Defensive Player of the Year, while Quinn Epperly earned Offensive Player of the Year honors last season.
Zeuli, a second-team All-Ivy honoree last year, has a strong case at Defensive Player of the Year honors, especially after being one of only four defensive players to earn unanimous first-team distinction. He led the league with 16.5 tackles for loss, and he ranked second in the league with 8.7 tackles per game. He had 16 tackles in his final collegiate game, and he ranked in the Top 5 in the Ivy League in sacks.
“I couldn't be happier to see Mike Zeuli earn First Team honors,” head coach Bob Surace said. “I thought he was the best defensive player in the league, and he was a great leader for our group. Nobody played harder than Mike, and it will be up to our younger guys to replace that energy and production on the field.”
Bieck was the most consistent kicker in the Ivy League this season. He made 13 of 14 field goal attempts (92.9%) and he was perfect on all 30 extra point attempts. He also added to his range, hitting a pair of 46-yard field goals during the final month of the season.
“Nolan did a great job this year on his consistency,” Surace said. “In this league, when games are usually so close, his ability to finish drives with points was crucial. I look forward to see how he can lead us in all aspects of special teams next season.”
Both Colcolough and Ramos earned their first All-Ivy honors this season. When two-time All-Ivy honoree Spenser Huston was injured, that duo became the anchors on both sides of the offensive line for the majority of the season.
The defensive duo of Desiré and Williams also earned their first All-Ivy honors this year. Desiré finished his first season as a starter on the defensive line ranked in the Top 15 in sacks and the Top 20 in tackles for loss, while Williams ranked sixth in the Ivy League with 76 tackles this season. Only one underclassman had more tackles than Williams, who added seven passes defensed and four tackles for loss on the season.
Nelson has earned All-Ivy League honors, but those came with a baton instead of a football. The track sprinter earned second-team All-Ivy honors as a returner after leading the Ivy League with two kickoff returns for touchdowns. His 24.8-yard kickoff return average was second-best in the league.
Carpenter earned Honorable Mention after catching 20 passes for 236 yards in his first season as the starting tight end. Kelley caught 61 passes for 683 yards and four touchdowns to complete his remarkable career, where he finished seventh all-time at Princeton in receptions (129) and 11th in receiving yards (1,392).
Gaffney has earned All-Ivy League honors every year of his career; he ranked third in the league in interceptions (3) and in the Top 10 in passes defended (7) this season. Hylton emerged as a force at the linebacker spot, where he ranked second in tackles for loss (11.5) and seventh in total tackles (75).
Roth ranked third in the Ivy League in punting at 38.7 yards per kick.
“For guys like Connor Kelley and Mike Ramos, I am thrilled that they get to end their careers as All-Ivy League players,” Surace said. “They were part of a senior class that changed the direction of the program, and we will miss them. For all of the others, we are excited to see how hard they push this season to build upon their all-league performances this past season.”
