BOX SCORE
MANKATO, Minn. (12/12/14) - With the third-best scoring offense in the nation, No. 3 Minnesota State exceeded its average of 3.88 goals per game, in a 5-0 win over Princeton on Friday night at the Verizon Wireless Center.
For the first time since the season opener, Princeton (2-10-1) outshot its opponent in the first period, 9-7. However with four minutes remaining Minnesota State (13-4) had the two shots on goal that mattered.
Leading goal scorer Bryce Gervais put the Mavericks on the board at 16:36 with a goal off a rebound. Gervais collected a rebound off a pad save on a shot by Casey Nelson. Nelson ripped a shot from the top of the right circle with sophomore Colton Phinney making the leg save but Gervais got the rebound at the right pipe.
The Mavericks took advantage of Princeton's positioning with Tom Kroshus getting released from the penalty box at 18:46, and scored just three seconds later. Zach Palmquist roofed a shot over the right shoulder of Phinney to get the 2-0 edge at the close of the first period.
Shots stood 6-1 in Princeton's favor seven minutes into the game. Junior Mike Ambrosia had a nice move to get around goaltender Cole Huggins but his shot went just wide. Freshman Max Becker had a chance off a deep face off, sophomore Garrett Skrbich had a 1x1, junior Kyle Rankin tried to put away a Matt Nelson rebound and sophomore Ben Foster had a backhand shot all stopped by Huggins.
Dylan Margonari made it 3-0 just 1:29 into the second period with a wraparound goal with Brad McClure and Zach Stepan assisting. It would be the only goal of the second period as the Mavericks countered in shots, 13-4.
Two more goals came in the third period.
C.J. Franklin's goal at 10:01 was a total team effort with Franklin getting the glory. Blak Thompson had the first shot that was saved, Brett Knowles got the rebound and his shot clanged off the pipe before Franklin got the final whack at it and put it over the line.
Max Gaede expanded the lead with help from Knowles at 14:03.
Phinney finished the game with 31 saves, while Huggins earned his seventh career shutout with 15 stops.
Princeton was 0 for 4 on the power play, while Minnesota State was 0 for 3.
The teams will play again tomorrow night at 7:07 p.m., CT at the Verizon Wireless Center.
