PRINCETON, N.J. (12/28/14) - A delayed penalty, power-play goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker as No. 14 Quinnipiac defeated Princeton 1-0 in men's hockey on Sunday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.
With the stands full with 2,299 fans in attendance and playing before a national audience on ESPNU, Princeton and Quinnipiac did not disappoint.
The Tigers looked good from the get go, applying pressure on Quinnipiac's defense and doing a great job defensively themselves, with excellent coverage and keeping the Bobcats to the outside.
In the first 13 games of the season, Princeton was outshot by an average of 15 shots per game. This weekend? The difference was just four.
The teams went scoreless for the first two periods with Princeton having an excellent chance of scoring in the final minute of the second period. On the power play, senior Tucker Brockett ripped a shot that rebounded to the left wing to sophomore Ben Foster. Foster couldn't settle the puck to get off a shot before the buzzer signaled the end of the period.
Princeton had a great opportunity to get on the board first in the opening minutes of the third. Freshman Matt Nelson had a drive and senior Aaron Kesselman tried to bang it home before freshman David Hallisey hit the pipe. Off the next face off junior Mike Ambrosia ripped a shot from the slot that went off the toe of netminder Michael Garteig and Kesselman followed up with a shot from the corner. The whistle sounded shortly thereafter with a scrum in front of the Quinnipiac bench.
Ambrosia was assessed a five-minute major for interference and a game misconduct, while Danny Federico got two for roughing. After the Bobcats killed off Federico's penalty, they still had three minutes left on Ambrosia's major and they capitalized.
Roughly 20 seconds into the power play, the official's arm went up to signal another Princeton penalty and Devon Toews found the back of the net. Landon Smith picked up a loose puck in the corner and fed Matthew Peca in the slot. Peca sent a backhanded back to Toews for the one-timer, delayed penalty and power-play goal.
The Tigers had a number of chances to get the game-tying goal and used an extra skater for the final 58 seconds. Face off woes, 17-35 in the game, kept Princeton from tying the game up as the Tigers struggled to get solid puck possession in the waning seconds.
Garteig made 21 saves in net for the Bobcats, while sophomore Colton Phinney stopped 24 for the Tigers.
Princeton was 0 for 2 on the power play, while Quinnipiac was 1 for 3.
"It's disheartening," Princeton head coach Ron Fogarty said. "You want the team and the guys to win when they work that hard you want to see tangible results. As a coaching staff, we feel bad for the guys right now. They are working so hard, and we want them to enjoy a night after that kind of work."
"The first half of the season, before Christmas, we said it would be a learning process. Now it's an execution. Do things we've been working on. There's no excuses. Bring your A game every night and we've seen that now from a lot of guys for two consecutive nights against a top opponent."
