Women Hold 2nd After Day 1 Of Brown Open; Relay Places Top 20 At Nationals
December 06, 2014 | Women's Swimming and Diving
The first day of the 2014 Brown Open saw a pair of shorthanded Princeton swimming & diving teams get out to strong starts in the three-day competition. The Tiger men won five of six events and hold a 78-point lead after one day, while the Tiger women hold second place behind Yale.
Several of the top swimmers from both teams are in Greensboro, N.C., for the 2014 AT&T Winter National Championships, which conclude Saturday. Among the highlights there have been a sixth-place finish for Teo D'Alessandro in the 200 IM and a Top-20 showing for the Princeton 400 medley relay team of Lindsay Temple, Olivia Chan, Elsa Welshofer and Nikki Larson. The quartet went 3:44.56 to finish 17th in a loaded field.
The women opened the night session with a third-place finish in the 200 free relay. The quartet of Madelyn Veith, Katie Diller, Elizabeth McDonald and Morgan Karetnick finished in 1:33.72.
Freshman Claire McIlmail had Princeton's best individual finish of the night, taking second in the 500 free in 4:50.11. Senior teammate Reese Iriondo added a sixth-place finish in 4:55.86.
Both Chan and Larson were 'A' finalists in the 200 IM at the Ivy Championships last year, so their presence was missed in the event Friday night. However, both Beverly Nguyen and Sada Stewart were also 'A' finalists, and they were both Top 8 finishers in the Brown Open. Nguyen took sixth in 2:03.60, while Stewart took eighth in 2:06.19.
Both McDonald (5th, 23.64) and Veith (7th, 23.89) were finalists in the 50 free, and the quartet of Stewart, Melissa Fulenwider, Morgan Karetnick and Katie Diller finished fourth in the 400 medley relay in 3:48.62.
Princeton has dominated the Brown Open men's field — which does not include Yale — including a pair of relay victories. The team of Harrison Wagner, Connor Maher, Julian Mackrel and Alexander Lewis won the 200 free relay in 1:20.21, while the foursome of Maher, Jack Pohlmann, Corey Okubo and Jeremy Wong won the 400 medley relay in 3:14.61.
The Tigers are without reigning 500 free Ivy League 'A' finalist Sam Smiddy, who is competing at Winter Nationals, so the men's top finisher in the event was David Paulk (4:28.43). Okubo put Princeton right back in the win column by taking the 200 IM in 1:47.80, while junior Marco Bove finished third in 1:48.98.
Lewis, another of Princeton's highly touted freshmen, topped Wagner in a tight 50 free showdown. Lewis won in 20.35, while Wagner finished in 20.44. Mackrel made it a 1-2-3 finish in 20.63.
The last individual win for the men came on the 1-meter board, where Michael Manhard scored 318.95 points to grab the win.
