Swim/Dive Teams Claim Several Wins Heading Into Final Day At Brown Open
December 07, 2014 | Men's Swimming and Diving
Several victories on both sides highlighted a strong second day for the Princeton men's and women's swimming and diving teams at the 2014 Brown Open. The competition will conclude Sunday with a preliminary session at 10 am and a finals session at 5 pm.
The women continue to hold second place in the meet despite missing four of their top swimmers, who are competing at the 2014 AT&T Winter National Championships in Greensboro, N.C.
While the top swimmers are elsewhere, nobody has matched the win percentage this season of sophomore diver Caitlin Chambers, who remained unbeaten on the season with a win on the 1-meter board. Chambers scored 293.20 points, and she will look for another weekend sweep Saturday in the 3-meter competition.
The swimming competition opened with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay, as the quartet of Shirley Wang, Alisabeth Marsteller, Morgan Karetnick and Madelyn Veith finished in 1:43.52.
Beverly Nguyen took second in the 400 IM in 4:19.94, while McDonald matched that finish in the 100 fly in 54.08.
Freshman Claire McIlmail gave Princeton an impressive victory in the 200 free in 1:47.97, while senior teammate Reese Iriondo added a fourth-place finish in 1:50.16.
Following a sixth-place finish in the 100 breast by Melissa Fulenwider (1:05.65), senior Shirley Wang grabbed a win in the 100 back in 55.34. The quartet of Sada Stewart, Iriondo, Mallory Remick and McIlmail took fifth in the 800 free relay in 7:32.35.
The men continue to lead the field, and they opened Saturday's competition with a win in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Andrew Helber, Jack Pohlmann, Connor Maher and Harrison Wagner won the event in 1:27.60, and freshman Corey Okubo followed with a win in the 400 IM in 3:48.15, which was 10 seconds faster than anybody in the field.
Freshman Ben Schafer took second in the 100 fly in 48.22, and teammate David Paulk finished second in the 200 free in 1:38.09. Pohlmann won the 100 breast in 54.19, while Maher finished second in the 100 back in 49.17.
Michael Manhard capped a perfect weekend on the boards with a win in the 3-meter competition (386.55), and the quartet of Zach Buerger, Michael Hauss, Okubo and Paulk took second in the 800 free relay in 6:40.14.
