BOSTON, Mass. (9/20/14) - Junior Brendan McSherry scored the game-tying goal in the 61st minute as the Princeton men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with Boston University on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Nickerson Field.
Princeton (1-2-2) found itself in a 2-0 defict after 36 minutes with BU's (4-3) Dominique Badji scored twice. Junior Thomas Sanner cut the Terriers lead back before the halftime buzzer with a goal in the 41st minute. McSherry's equalizer would be the final tally of the game as the double overtime was scoreless in what was the first meeting between these two programs.
Badji scored in the eighth minute when he sped by his defender and cut in towards the goal, firing to the right of goalkeeper Ben Hummel and into the far side of the goal. Badji's second goal in the 36th minute was quick header on a cross into the box by David Amirani.
Defender Josh Miller earned his first assist of the season, playing in his second game, as he fed Sanner for the Tigers' first goal. Miller intercepted a pass in the midfield and sent the ball up the field where Sanner found himself with four defenders. He split them down the middle and buried a shot into the far right corner past Nick Thomson.
It took McSherry 20 seconds to score when he checked in off the bench in the second half. He along with Bryan Windsor came in on a BU goal kick, that made its way just past the midfield line. Senior Joe Saitta headed it forward and it was picked up by senior Myles McGinley. McGinley lofted a shot into the box that was batted away by Thomson but fell right to the feet of McSherry. McSherry delivered a great chip shot that bounced three yards from the goal line and then into the net.
Princeton performed much better in the second half, as opposed to the first. The Tigers outshot the Terriers 9-6 in the second half while both teams were even in the two 10-minute overtimes with three shots apiece.
Hummel and Thomson both finished the game with two saves apiece.
Princeton will make the hour drive into Philadelphia on Wednesday night, Sept. 24 to take on Drexel at 7 p.m.
