PHILADELPHIA (9/24/14) - Junior Thomas Sanner's converted penalty kick in the 53rd minute was the difference maker as the Princeton men's soccer team defeated Drexel 1-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Vidas Field.
The Tigers dominated the ball rarely allowing the Dragons to get into the box. The defense smothered any effort in the attacking third and the speed of the Tigers was noticeable. Josh Miller and Joe Saitta each had terrific plays knocking the ball from the opposition's feet using speed to outrun the opponent and tackle the ball away. Princeton did not allow a single shot on goal and gave up just five total shots. Junior Ben Hummel collected his second shutout of the season in goal.
Princeton pressured on the other end of the field, taking 12 total shots.
"It was a complete game for us," Princeton head coach Jim Barlow said. "We've been talking about trying to put together a solid 90 minutes, especially defensively, becase we've been giving up a lot of goals, and we've been scoring a lot of goals."
"We felt that we needed to get back to being a tough team defensively, and tough in terms of allowing chances and allowing them behind us. We really wanted to pick up our ability to put pressure on the other team in the midfield and win the ball in parts of the field that matter. And tonight we did that."
The Tigers received a penalty kick opportunity after Sanner was dragged down just inside the top of the 18-yard box. He sent a low shot to the left of a diving Tyler Afflerbach for the game-winning goal. Afflerbach finished the game with three saves as the Dragons drop to 2-4-2 overall.
Princeton, now 2-2-2 on the season, hosts Binghamton on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m., in the first of a five-game homestand.
