PRINCETON, N.J. – Extending its Ivy League record start to 17-0 with a dominating 83-54 victory over the University of Pennsylvania, the Princeton University women's basketball team moved up one spot to No. 23 in the latest USA Today Coaches Poll.
Last week, the Tigers became the first team in conference history to crack the coaches' poll with a No. 24 ranking. Yesterday, the Orange and Black punched in at No. 19 in the Associated Press top-25 – the highest-ever ranking for an Ivy program.
In 2011-12, Princeton became the first team in league history to earn a national ranking, claiming the No. 24 spot in the final AP poll. Last week, the Tigers set the conference's previous high with a No. 22 AP ranking and also became the first Ivy team to earn a place in both national polls at the same time.
On Jan. 6, Princeton received 23 first-place votes to vault into the top slot in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 poll. As of games played through Jan. 12, the Tigers sit 17th in the NCAA RPI rankings and sixth in the Jeff Sagarin/CBN Women's Basketball ratings.
Statistically, Princeton leads the nation in three-point shooting percentage (43.5). The Tigers are also sixth in field goal percentage (48.3), seventh in scoring margin (+24.9), 13th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.27), 15th in assists per game (17.7), and 22nd in scoring offense (77.2).
Also one of the nation's top defensive teams, the Orange and Black are 11th in points allowed (52.4), 14th in opponent three-point percentage (25.3), 16th in rebounding margin (+9.8), and 21st in opponent field-goal percentage.
Alongside No. 1 South Carolina (16-0), the Tigers are just one of two remaining undefeated teams in the nation. Already holding the Ivy women's basketball record with its 17-0 start, only the 1970-71 Penn men's team strung together more victories to open a season, going 28-0.
