Men's Swimming & Diving Heads North For Annual H-Y-P Showdown
January 29, 2015 | Men's Swimming and Diving
H-Y-P weekend is special, regardless of records. But when the three programs come into the annual showdown with a combined 13-0 record in the Ivy League, it does add to the drama.
The Princeton men's swimming and diving team will be looking to claim its first sweep of Harvard and Yale since 2012 this weekend at Blodgett Pool in Boston. The Tigers, whose five-year Ivy championship streak ended at the hands of Harvard last season in Blodgett, are looking to ignite the second half of their season with a special weekend.
The meet begins Saturday night at 6 pm, and will conclude Super Sunday at noon; each session will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
The Tigers are currently 6-2 on the season, with their lone losses coming to nationally ranked opponents Ohio State and NC State. The weekend will also provide some early matchups that could serve as previews for the 2015 Ivy League Championships, which will be held Feb. 26-28 at DeNunzio Pool.
In the 100 back, two-time Ivy League champion Michael Strand could match up with Harvard's Jack Manchester, who currently has the second-fastest 100 back time in the league. Manchester holds the fastest 200 back time, though Tiger freshman Corey Okubo is second this season.
The Ivy League top three in the 100 breast represent either Princeton or Harvard; leading the way is Tiger junior Jack Pohlmann (54.19), while Crimson freshman Shane McNamara is the only other swimmer this season to go below 54.50.
The 200 IM could be a Harvard-Princeton showdown; reigning Ivy champion Teo D'Alessandro leads the way at 1:45.52, while Okubo (1:47.80) is just ahead of two Crimson swimmers. Okubo is also the only Ivy swimmer this season to break 3:50 in the 400 IM.
