NEW HAVEN, Conn. (1/30/15) - A five-minute major penalty was Princeton's Achilles heel as the Tigers dropped a 4-0 game to Yale on Friday, Jan. 30 at Ingalls Rink. All four goals came in the second period.
The Tigers looked solid in the first period and were outshooting the Bulldogs until the hitting from behind infraction.
Yale started the second period with 2:47 of power-play time and converted twice.
Nate Repensky took a shot from the point that ricocheted off the back of the boards and back towards the goal to Carson Cooper. After not being able to squeeze the puck between Colton Phinney and the left pipe, Frank DiChiara was able to get it to go from the front just 37 seconds into the middle frame.
A Tommy Fallen outlet pass led to Yale's second goal at 2:07 as Stu Wilson got the pass and skated in for the tally.
The two-goal deficit was too much to overcome as the Tigers allowed two more goals in a span of 1:15 at the close of the period. Cooper scored at 17:12 on a redirection on the doorstep and Mike Doherty tallied a close-range goal at 18:17 as the Bulldogs took a 4-0 lead into the locker room.
Freshman Ben Halford came in on relief for the third period for Phinney. He stopped all 11 shots he faced, while Phinney left the game with 25 saves in 40 minutes.
Princeton was on the receiving end of its own five-minute power play midway through the third but the Tigers couldn't sneak anything by Alex Lyon and dig their way out of their four-goal hole. Lyon finished the game with 31 saves as Yale outshot Princeton 40-31.
The Tigers were 0 for 3 on the power play, while the Bulldogs were and 2 for 3.
Princeton will face Brown, tomorrow at 4 p.m., at Meehan Auditorium. Brown lost 5-3 to Quinnipiac this evening.
