BOX SCORE l POSTGAME HIGHLIGHTS/INTERVIEW
Brown's Johnny Pena scored on a seven-yard touchdown run with 57 seconds remaining, while the Bears defense forced two turnovers late, to lead the hosts to a 38-31 victory over Princeton Saturday afternoon at Brown Stadium.
Princeton which played from behind almost the whole game, thanks in part to a 99-yard kickoff return on the game's opening play, tied the score three different times during the game, but the Tigers were never able to grab the lead. They had two opportunities in the final quarter, but Brown hit Tiger quarterback Chad Kanoff on a pair of passes, both of which were intercepted.
That latter came in Princeton territory with 1:57 remaining in regulation, and Brown needed one pass play to get into field goal range. The Bears ultimately scored on Pena's run, leaving the Tigers 57 seconds to try for the tying score. Kanoff moved the Tigers into Brown territory, but a sack on the final play ended the comeback attempt.
The loss, Princeton's first of the season, happened in large part because of two of the team's biggest strengths this season — penalties and third-down execution. Princeton committed a season-high 11 penalties for 94 yards, and it was only 3 of 10 on third-down attempts, a far cry from its 11-for-15 performance the previous weekend.
On the flip side, Brown was 13 for 20 on third down attempts, and it held the ball for more than 35 minutes of the game. The Bears actually had opportunities in the first half to build a significant lead, but the Tigers forced three turnovers and got a blocked field goal by Matt Arends to keep the game within reach.
The Princeton offense, stifled through much of the first half, got on track in the second half, and much of it came from do-it-all sophomore John Lovett. One week after scoring four touchdowns in a home win over Colgate, Lovett rushed for two more scores and caught a career-long 42-yard touchdown catch while accounting for 186 total yards in the game.
Kanoff completed 24 of 44 passes for a career-best 321 yards, and he threw a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to junior tight end Scott Carpenter that evened the score at 31-31. Carpenter caught five passes for 39 yards, while junior Trevor Osborne caught three for 79 yards.
Arends had a terrific all-around game on defense, recording 12 tackles (eight solo), including two for loss, and adding two breakups, a sack, an interception and a blocked kick. Classmate John Hill added 13 tackles, while linebacker Luke Catarius added eight in reserve following an injury to All-Ivy linebacker Rohan Hylton early in the game.
Senior Anthony Gaffney added an interception, while junior Birk Olson recovered an early fumble forced by Hylton.
Princeton will return to New England next Saturday, as the Tigers will face reigning Ivy League champion Harvard Saturday at noon on the American Sports Network and Ivy League Digital Network.
