Lussi, Asom Earn Ivy Player, Rookie of the Week Honors
October 19, 2015 | Women's Soccer
Setting and approaching records for their honors, Princeton junior Tyler Lussi and freshman Mimi Asom have earned Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week honors for helping Princeton to a 2-0 week.
The Tigers beat Lehigh 2-0 last Wednesday in the team's final non-league game, and three days later, Princeton beat Columbia 3-1 to run its winning streak to nine games, its overall record to 11-3 and its Ivy League record to 4-0.
Lussi scored a goal in each game and Asom had a goal against Columbia. Lussi has now scored 11 goals this year and 39 on her career, tying her for third in program history with Emily Behncke '06, putting her two back of second-place Linda DeBoer '86 (41) and eight back of record holder Esmeralda Negron '05 (47).
Asom has nine goals this year, closing in on the program record for goals by a freshman. Lussi had 10 two years ago and DeBoer had 12 in her rookie season of 1982.
Lussi's honor ties her with Brown's Theresa Hirschauer (1985-88) and Penn's Jessica Fuccello (2006-09) with six career Ivy Player of the Week recognitions. Her third honor of the season ties her with five other players, including Negron and Jen Hoy '13 for that record.
Asom won the honor for the fifth straight week, sharing it this time with Penn's Sasha Stephens. That advances Asom's Ivy record for Rookie of the Week honors in a season.
The Player of the Week award is Princeton's fifth this year, tying the 2015 Tigers with the 2004 and 2012 teams as well as the 2009 Penn team for the most in Ivy League history. Vanessa Gregoire has contributed two Ivy Player of the Week honors to that total. The five rookie awards are one short of the league record for a school, and Princeton's ninth combined award this season advances its Ivy record there.
The Tigers will have a first-place showdown Saturday at Harvard, with both teams entering the weekend at 4-0 in Ivy play and five standings points clear of the rest of the league.
