Second-Day Surge Leads Men's Golf to Title in Fall's Final Event
October 20, 2015 | Men's Golf
Princeton's men's golf team began the day in sixth place at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational, nine shots off the pace.
After trimming 16 shots off their Monday score, the Tigers surged to the top of the leaderboard and finished ahead of first-day leader Rhode Island by three shots, claiming the tournament title at The Members Club at Four Streams in Beallsville, Md.
Quinn Prchal tied with Rhode Island's Billy Walthouse after 36 holes, but Walthouse won a playoff 37th hole to claim the individual title. The pair were the only players to post red numbers, each finishing at 2-under to clear William & Mary's David Hicks by three shots.
The big drop from Monday's round to Tuesday's was uncommon at the event. Of the other 11 teams in the field, only five teams had lower scores Tuesday than Monday, and only Richmond had a comparable drop, also cutting 16 shots to jump from eighth to a fifth-place tie.
"They're a talented group and they've got a lot of fight in them, a lot of character in them," Will Green, the J. Stuart Francis '74 head coach of men's golf, said of his team. "After having seen the course for one extra day, they kind of knew where to miss it, where to hit it, and just played a much tighter round."
Princeton had competed at Georgetown-hosted events 10 times before with a high finish of third in the 2001-02 season.
The tournament win is Princeton's third in five events on the fall, marking just the second time in program history that Princeton has won three multi-team tournaments in the same year, joining the 1999-2000 campaign when the Tigers won three spring events.
The team will have until March before it plays in another tournament.
"As great as this accomplishment is, we have to go into next March starting from scratch," Green said. "It certainly proves to us that we're capable of closing when we need to, but at the same time, while taking the winter off, you kind of lose any momentum that you have. We know that we have got to work extremely hard once the second semester starts and hopefully we're able to put it together when the spring season begins."
