Men's Tennis Wraps Play at USTA/ITA Regional
October 26, 2015 | Men's Tennis
With a doubles team making the semifinals and Diego Vives advancing to the singles quarters, the Princeton men's tennis team ended its run at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Monday at Yale.
Luke Gamble and Alex Day won twice Sunday to reach the semis, but the Dartmouth pair of Roko Glasnovic and Diego Pedraza defeated the Tiger duo 7-5, 7-5 to make Tuesday's final.
Vives pushed Penn's Kyle Mautner to three sets, but the Quaker rallied from a second-set loss to Vives to win 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
"Though we didn't advance today, I was pleased with the quality of play in both matches," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "In each set of doubles, we led 5-4 with a set point but didn't convert. However, a lot of that had to do with the play of Dartmouth, which played a bit better on the pivotal points. In singles, Diego elevated his play in the second set and put himself in a good position to win, but again I give Mautner credit for making the plays down the stretch in the third set. Overall, it was a good tournament considering the timing of the event with our midterms. That is always challenging for our guys, but they handled that as well as they could and competed hard. We saw some positive things and will look forward to being back outdoors at LSU in 11 days."
The Tigers will have the weekend away from competition before beginning the LSU Fall Invitational Thursday, Nov. 5.
