Wisconsin Upsets 34th-Ranked Men's Tennis in Dual-Match Opener
January 28, 2016 | Men's Tennis
Princeton's men's tennis team ended its last dual-match season against a Big Ten team, Minnesota, on a warm spring day in the NCAA tournament in Virginia, and the Tigers opened the new season on a chilly evening in Wisconsin.
Both times, the Tigers' opponent prevailed, with Wednesday's match going 4-3 to host Wisconsin as the Badgers upset their 34th-ranked visitors. Princeton pushed the doubles point to a tiebreaker on court two, but Wisconsin's Jose Carranza and Jakhongir Jalalov prevailed 10-8 in that tiebreak to clinch the point. Tom Colautti and Josh Yablon had a win on court three to help make the court two match decisive.
Wisconsin won the first three singles matches to be decided, taking points on courts one, two and five before Princeton took the last three matches to end. Jimmy Wasserman and Diego Vives, teammates at second doubles, each had a singles win and Yablon went 2 for 2 on the day by winning his match on court four.
Princeton will have two more chances this weekend to knock off a Big Ten opponent, taking on unranked Michigan Friday at 5 p.m. and 64th-ranked Iowa Saturday at 3:30 p.m., both at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

Coach Billy Pate on the match: "Tough loss to tonight to start the season. Wisconsin played well start to finish and we just didn't quite get the momentum we needed. We missed on a couple of match points for the doubles point, and Wisconsin came up with some big serves in those situations. We didn't get our best performance in a few spots in singles and we'll need to be better on Friday. It's always challenging in the first match of the year, but we can make those adjustments. We'll travel back to NYC and expect a more gritty and resilient effort against Michigan." |
