PRINCETON, N.J. (10/6/15) - Senior Thomas Sanner scored his Ivy League leading sixth goal of the season in the 56th minute to regain the lead for Princeton over Seton Hall and the Tigers walked away with a 3-2 win on Tuesday night.
With the win Princeton extends its win streak over Seton Hall to eight straight.
It didn't take the Tigers long to get on the board as senior Nico Hurtado tallied his second goal of the season in the fourth minute. Sophomore Matthew Mangini made a nice leg save to keep the ball in deep inside the attacking third. Senior Brendan McSherry was the recipient and he centered the ball past three defenders to Hurtado, stationed in the middle of the 18-yard box, who scored.
Despite Princeton's heavy-handedness on the ball, Seton Hall managed to knot the game at 1-1 in the 29th. The Pirates' Alex Pozesky intercepted a Princeton throw-in in front of the Tigers' bench and crossed the ball to Samuel Geiler who was open on the left side.
A penalty kick, Princeton's first of the year, regained the lead but it would be short lived. A hand ball gave sophomore Daniel Bowkett the opportunity to convert for his goal of the year and he did in the 39th minute.
Less than five minutes later however it was again a tie game as the Pirates scored off their own throw-in. Lukas Pangonis got his own throw-in back and after two Princeton defenders in a scramble, Danny Bartok took advantage and snuck the ball between senior goalie Ben Hummel and the right post. Hummel got a piece of the ball but it just skimmed his finger tips before going in.
The deciding goal came in the 56th minute when senior Josh Miller earned his first assist of the season, when he sent a cross into the box from the left side where Sanner headed it past goalie Brandon Barnes.
Barnes, playing in place of starter Julian Spindler, ended his night with seven saves.
Hummel made three saves in the win for the Tigers.
Princeton outshot Seton Hall 19-11, including a strong 12-3 differential in the second half. Seton Hall had seven corner kicks to Princeton's five.
Princeton, now 4-3-1, returns to Ivy League action on Saturday when it travels to Brown. Game time is at 7 p.m., in Providence.
